Horns blaring in the distance snapped him back to reality. A reality he prayed that he desperately and very quickly needed to find a way to change before he fucked around and lost Qshauna forever. Retrieving his phone from the passenger seat of his ride, he killed the engine and headed inside. Noah headed toward the hostess stand, but before he could ask for his party, Judah waved him over to the booth that his family occupied.

“Shit, ‘bout time you showed up, bruh,” Lukah chuckled as he started in on Noah the minute he slid into the space by their father.

His father and Judah chuckled at Lukah’s comment, too, but they wanted to know the same thing. It was unlike Noah to be late for much of anything, let alone dinner at his favorite restaurant.

“Shut up, did you order my damn chicken tacos, nigga?” Noah asked Lukah as he cleaned his hand with one of the wet naps on the table, opened his straw, and dropped it into his tall glass of ice water.

“I shouldn’t have, but I did,” Lukah chuckled as he reached for a hot, freshly baked roll from the basket in the center of the table. “Seriously, though, Noah, why you late?” Judah spoke up, and he devoured his rolls. “Pop was about to call you.”

“Yeah, son, you’re never late for dinner when we come here. Is everything okay?” Gunnah looked up from his plate of buttered rolls as he reached for the garlic butter.

“Yeah, I—”

Noah’s response was interrupted by their waitress, who’d returned with their dinner. After Gunnah blessed the food, everyone dug into their meals.

“I’m good, Pop,” Noah began after chewing his food. “Some shit just been heavy on my mind and I’m trying to sort it all out.”

“Noah, we all know you talking about Shauna, bruh,” Judah tossed his two cents. “You ain’t gotta talk in code, bro.”

A round of light laughter took over their space before everyone sobered enough for Noah to proceed.

Grinning, Noah took a sip of his water then said, “I ain’t speaking in code, I just didn’t say her name, but yeah, Pop, as I was saying before, ya petty ass son just had to have his say, it’s Shauna. She’s being real resistant about us getting back together. And even though I get it and I respect it, that shit is annoying the fuck outta me. Shit, she knows I still love her. Hell, I never stopped. But it’s like she still ain’t trying to hear me.”

“Damn, Noah, I hate that you didn’t listen to us when we asked you to hear her out. I hate to see you hurting like this. You make me wanna beat yo’ ass all the time but shit, you, my big bro, and I can’t stand to see you going through this shit over a fuck nigga.” Judah shook his head. He couldn’t stand that nigga Chauncey.

“Yeah,” Lukah nodded his agreement, “That shit make me sick to my fucking stomach how much we looked out for the nigga and called him family.
